Cody, WY vs. Golden, CO

I stopped by this morning and there were some nat'l headlines about Iran's nuke plans: they're not backing down. Then there was one about Realtors expecting housing to level out. Well, that's nice to know the Realtors' opinions on international affairs.

But while looking at the Cody headlines, it seems that Wyoming (particularly Cody) and Colorado (particularly the Lookout Mtn. area) are not in the best of relations, still. Why? Well, it all goes back to the death and resulting burial of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody:

William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody was one of the first international superstars, gaining fame in America and across Europe when politicians and royalty were the leading public figures.

While alive, his name and image sold dime novels and show tickets, and since his death in 1917, it has been attached to everything from cigars to lunch boxes.

He remains a compelling icon of the American West.

And nearly 90 years after his burial on Lookout Mountain near Golden, Colo. — or atop Cedar Mountain in Cody, depending on whom you ask — a long-simmering battle continues over the bones of Buffalo Bill.

At the heart of the controversy is the collision of commerce and culture, of sentiment and showmanship.

The dispute arose even before Buffalo Bill's burial, when locals in Cody got wind of a plan to bury him near Denver, where he died while visiting relatives.

Though the historical record shows his final resting place is Lookout Mountain, there's clear evidence he wanted to be buried on Cedar Mountain, and a popular Cody folk tale makes a case that he actually was.

So, what say you? Should Buffalo Bill be buried west of Cody, the very town he founded, or west of Denver, CO, 500 miles away? In case you're wondering, I say Cody, WY is the rightful burial site.

Categorization explanation (don't expect this for every post I make!):

  • Politics/State (WY)—Because it's pert'near a political issue in the state of Wyoming
  • Trivial Bits of info: Because it's interesting trivia
  • Obviously: It seems only obvious that Buffalo Bill ought to be buried in Cody, WY
  • Out of the Ordinary: How many locales fight over a dead body?

  1. I think he should stay where he is, it’s been too long. 🙂

  2. April! I had wondered if you were behind some of the stats coming out of Romania.

Yes, it has been quite a while. I think it's just one of those rival issues that goes back so far, it won't be settled (sorta like the Broncos/Raiders 😉 ). It is probably now more of a "where should the tombstone be" debate than anything.

Edit (4-26-06): Thanks for being my first international commenter!
